Mission Work
of the
Poughkeepsie United Methodist
Church
In a church undergoing growth, change and rejuvenation, the Mission
and Outreach
Commission becomes the conscience, or moral center of the church,
guiding
the congregation to look at the needs outside the sanctuary doors. Even
when Sunday school attendance has grown and financial giving has
increased,
community needs should not be neglected. The Mission and Outreach
Commission of the Poughkeepsie
United Methodist Church has met this challenge, identifying the needs
of
the Poughkeepsie area and participating in the fulfillment of these
needs.
In January, 1997 our church adopted a multi-year Long Rang Plan. In
the section on outreach this plan identifies focus areas:
- Inner City Poughkeepsie
- Second Hand Rose - a clothing
and
furniture
store staffed by volunteers and stocked by donations from the
congregation
- Tubman Terrace Housing - An affordable housing
facility
partially
owned by the church
- Harriet Tubman After School Program - Provides after
school tutoring of grade school aged children at the Tubman Terrace
Housing.
- Dutchess Senior Citizen's Housing Corporation - Senior
housing facility
partially maintained by the church
- Dutchess County
- Foundation for Religion and Mental Health - Providing
pastoral-type
counseling and is supported financially with office space by the church
- Dutchess Coalition for the Homeless - provides
volunteer
staffing
an overnight homeless shelter on the City of Poughkeepsie
- Duchess Outreach - Provides volunteer and financial
assistance for
activities such as CROP Walk and food drives.
- Dutchess Interfaith Council - Provides meeting
facilities
and participates
in an interdenominational exchange of religious ideas.
- Habitat for Humanities - Provides financial and
volunteer
assistance
in affordable housing
- Grace Smith House - Collect personal care items for
this
Shelter
for Women in the Town of Poughkeepsie
- Gannett House - Provides financial and supports giving
for
the Shelter
for Women
- Concord Village -In its first step to meet the Long
Range
plan of
the church, the commission has added to its list of outreach
opportunities
a collection for Concord Village, a senior citizen housing project
planed
for Dutchess County.

Education of the congregation on Caribbean and South American
Ministries.
