Service Opportunities for Youth in February:

·       Midnight Run, Friday, Feb. 4: An overnight adventure in service. Don’t miss this opportunity to bless people in need. Students can help in many different ways:

o       Prep Work: help sort clothes before the Run, and make sandwiches that will be distributed to the hungry and homeless in New York City.

o       Senior High Youth: may actually join the Run, hitting the streets of NYC by midnight to provide food and warm clothing to the homeless.

·       Valentine’s Dinner Dance, Saturday, February 12: We’ll need senior high students to serve an elegant dinner and junior high students to provide child care, so couples in our church can enjoy a lovely date for a good cause.

THANK YOU! To all our wonderful hosts for the Advent Progressive Dinner: Alan Dooley, the Eagans, the Foys, the Nenos, and the Roths.

Why Retreats?

We just got back from the senior high retreat, and I am reminded again of how important retreats can be. Of course, it’s great to spend a whole weekend with other kids in the youth fellowship, playing games, singing and listening to music, talking and really getting to know each other. And there’s the joy of working together to cook meals for each other, clean up and do the chores together.

But even more than that, there is great opportunity for spiritual growth. We’re able to take a longer period of time to think about what it means to follow Jesus, to read the Bible, and to explore ways that this ancient text is still so relevant to our lives. Students get to know a small group of their peers better as they meet throughout the weekend. They work together to plan short worship times for the whole group. They are given unique opportunities to practice different kinds of prayer, worship, and to encounter God in new ways.

Retreats offer all of us a chance to press the reset button, to connect with God in ways we’ve forgotten and in ways that are new. I encourage the senior high students in particular to think about attending one of the Vida Nueva weekends in April, for another Christian growth experience this spring.
